SPECIAL EDUCATION (special ed.)

Ok..., for una wey get pikin for dis country, make una shine una eye read dis post well well! And for de rest of una, make una learn sometin new from dis post. Dis post na about one group of students for primary and sekondari skools. Dem dey call dis ones special education students (or special eds).

Dis students really dey special. Dem get dem own program for any skool wey dem dey. Dia own teachers dey different. And most skools get dem own special class. And when dem wan write wetin dey like WAEC for hia, dem own quesions dey different.

I remember one of my first work for yankee, I been teach small for one sekondari skool for my area. I notice say ee get dis students wey de skool tell me to give special attention. If I give classwork, I need to give dem less quesions and extra time to finish. I get to read de quesions to dem sometimes. And if dem special condition dey very serious, den dem get specialist wey go teach dem.

Before dis time I dey always tink say students like dis dey get dem own special skool, skool for blind, or skool for deaf and dumb or mentally handicap. Yes dem get dos skools hia. But special ed. students wey I see for de skool dey like any oda normal student to me.

But lata na im I come begin find out de difference. Some no dey understand tin wey dey for paper unless you read am aloud for dem, some no fit just sidon one place, some no fit stay where light too much for de class. I don even see one student wey dey use only colored paper for im classwork (white paper dey affect im eye). I tell you...., de different types of students wey make up special ed. plenty no be small.

And de law hia say dis students must go de same skool with regular students. If possible, dem must stay for de same class with de regular guys. And make I tell you...., sometimes ee dey very hard to teach class wey students like dis dey. Dis na because de rules you get to follow just too plenty. You no go dodge some and follow some. You must follow all of dem or..., de mama or papa fit sue de skool if dem find out say any teacher dey ignore dem pikin.

Now dis one come carry my mind go my beloved naija...,lol! Na who get time for dis kind students? If you no fit understand sometin for class, na you sabi. Either you struggle am by ya sef or you drop out. Nobody get time for you. All man must write de same exam and finish de same time. If ya own special ed. problem na say you no fit keep ya yansh for ya seat for long time, na im be say ya yansh and koboko go be like 5 and 6.

For naija if ya pikin no dey understand and you wan complain to de skool, dem get de right to no do anytin. Highest na to change skool for ya pikin. WAEC, NECO or any oda organization wey dey organize exam, no get any kind arrangement for students like dis. All students must write de same exam.

If at all naija wan begin to take care of de education of dis special ed. students, den we get plenty work to do. We need people wey dem train special for university to teach special ed. students, we need psychologist to check to see who qualify for special ed, we need special books, we need special lawyers, we need special counselors. And govment get to make laws we go protect dis students rights. And den you need enough books and oda materials for de papa and mama of dis children to learn about dem pikin condition and how to helep dem succeed with dem education.

Well....., I no know if and when we go eva ready for dis kind big tin. May be na when awa oga dem stop to dey thief awa money and start to do de work wey we elect dem to do!
