YANKEE PEOPLE AND NAIJA FOOD

As she begin eat de rice and stew, na so her face come begin change. Den she come dey smile dey nod her head like say she remember sometin. My friend Cathy, don dey worry me for long to cook my Naija food for her. She say she go like taste my country food.

Me sef don dey dodge her every time she ask. Any time wey she raise de topic, I go tell her say I no get de tins I need to cook for her. Den she come tell me to write de list of wetin I need so dat she go go buy dem for me. I write list give her, de usual tins to cook stew: tomato, pepper, meat, maggi (yes dem get magi for here) e.t.c.

Like play like play, she don go buy de tins wey I write for de list. She call
me say she dey bring dem de next day wey be Saturday for me to cook for her. “Ok oo, bring am. I dey wait for you”, be wetin I tell her. Saturday morning by 10am, she don land my domot.

Well before I begin cook, guy man need to solve maths with her for bedroom…, dat na if you know wetin I mean. Anyway sha, I cook de tin. And as I dey cook, de smell of de food just ova take her brain. Den when I finish and she come begin chop, I notice say I don ‘deliver’ for my cooking.

De normal experience wey any Naija person dey get na say yankee people no go wan taste awa food. But when you finally convince dem to taste am, dem dey usually like am. And most times dem go ask for more.

Some go even dey ask for recipe so dat dem go try am by dem sef. I notice say awa soups dey trip dem well well. And most times na de meat for de soup wey dey interest dem pass. But you need to see as dem dey try to eat eba and soup, lol. Ee dey always dey like where small pikin dey learn how to eat garri. Some no go use enough soup for each swallow, some go try to chew de eba like dat. Even to roll de eba well na wahala!

And when de almighty pepper come hit dem, na so you go see as dem body go dey shake. Onyibo face go just turn red. But dem go still dey eat and drink wata. Even de akata people wey claim to like food wey get pepper no dey fit stand awa food wey get pepper.

When dem taste fried dodo…! Ee dey like say dem taste manna from heaven. Most people no even know wetin plantain be. If you tell dem say na palm oil wey you use cook most of de food and den you show dem de palm oil, ee dey like say you just show dem new chemical to take cook. Dem no know wetin dat one be. And de smell of crayfish and dry fish..., lol, dat one dey throw dem off. De tin you go hia na "wetin die for ya house"!

For most Naija occassions, some go tell you say na de food wey carry dem come. Dem just like de different ways wey we dey take prepare meat. Pepper or no pepper, dat egusi soup wey carry dem come dis owambe must hia nwi for dem mouth.
