I BEEN GO FISHING

Last weekend be my first time to eva go fishing. I been dey idle, so I decide to do sometin to occupy my time. So I decide to “go fishing” with my pals. Dem don dey worry me to join dem.  So early Saturday, we come go walmart. I buy my own fishing pole and bait. I buy plastic fish as bait but my friends tell me to buy worms. I get to use worms because ee dey more effective.

All my life for Naija I neva fish before. I don live most of my life for Port Harcourt, and with all de wata wey surround de place, I neva one day say make I “go catch fish”. My papa and mama don warn us well well to no eva go near any river for de area. But I remember de day when I follow my friends go one stream wey dey near awa house, and I almost drown. Na so my popsi flog crase comot for my body dat day.

So dat fia of wata still dey my mind. But dis last Saturday I decide to face my fear. We use my friend boat.

I use de opportunity to learn how to drive engine boat. I enjoy am, but de tin been fear me small. Especially when oda boats dey pass awa own, de wave from de oda boats go shake awa own. And na so I go begin tink say awa boat wan tumble.

Meanwhile, we don load one cooler with iceblock and beer. For here, fishing and no beer, dey like tea without sugar. You must get alcohol to pass time. Dis na because fishing na very long activity. Me I been no know dis one. We put awa bait (I lata learn how to put worm for hook). Den come begin “find” fish. I get to learn how to throw my hook and line, how to know when fish dey chop my bait and how to draw my hook and roll my line quick quick so dat de fish no go escape.

We finally catch 15 big fish. Any time we catch any small fish, my friends go say make we throw am back. We finally spend 8 hours for de lake. Almost every town get dem own lake. Most of dem na man-made. People dey go fish, swim, do party or drive dem jet ski. Most weekends for some of de lakes dey like say na carnival dey go on. And den for summer time, na non stop activities for all de lakes. I dey usually go de when any person wey I know dey host sometin or during dem Independence Day wey be July 4th. And I dey always enjoy my sef.

Fishing just like hunting be very big pass time for people for dis country. Dem get TV stations wey dey only show tins about fishing. And just like dem get hunting stores wey dem dey sell tins for hunting, na so dem get fishing stores everywhere.

I know say we get Arugungu fishing festival for Kebbi State, but fishing na sometin wey plenty people for Naija tink say na for only “fishermen”. Dat one no be true. I wish say plenty people for Naija begin fish as dem hobby. Me I like my first experience. And I don decide to make am my new hobby.
